*Read Aloud*

On March 3, 2009, I read "Lily's Big Day" to my second grade student's. The book is about a little mouse named Lily wanting to be in her teacher's wedding as a flower girl. Lilly knew it was going to be the biggest day of her life....even though her teacher hadn't even asked her to be the flower girl yet! Her teacher finally told Lilly that his niece was going to be the flower girl but she could be the flower girl assistant and make sure everything went smoothly. Upset, Lilly agreed and when the wedding cam the teacher's niece froze and didn't know what to do, so Lilly picked her up, walked her down the aisle, and showed her exactly how to be a flower girl. I brought A flower girl crown and veil and let the little girls show everyone what the duty of a flower girl was. Since this was the biggest day of Lilly's life I asked my student's to write a paragraph and draw a picture of the biggest day of their life. They thoroughly enjoyed this and learned that even though they may not always get what they want, everything always works out in the end..

  1. I read my book just before spring break and it was awesome too! It was called "bad case of the stripes". Great one to read to that age group if you are looking for other titles. It teaches them to be themselves, even if that isn't always what everyone else does. My kids really loved it. I found out I like children's books a lot more too! Your idea of giving the kids a crown to visualize the story more was a great idea, wish I could have thought of something like that!

  2. That sounds like a great book for second graders to read and it has a great moral. I'm glad that your read-aloud experience went well. I'm doing mine tomorrow and I'm really nervous.

  3. I also have to do a read aloud this semester! I am glad that yours went well and am looking forward to reading my book in front of a 5th grade class. It is important for students to know that they cannot always get what they want. Children's books have a great way of teaching students moral lessons!

  4. I still have to do my read aloud this semester and I am looking forward to it! I think I am going to one about plants because they are learning about it for the next two weeks. However, I have read to the students in small groups every day that I have been in this class. I love reading to the kids because they are always so excited and ask tons of questions.

  5. What a good idea to have the students draw a picture of the biggest day of their life. I would have never thought of that! I like the idea behind your lesson. It is hard to understand when you are young that things always work out. The fact that you tried to teach them that concept is great.
