~*2nd Grade vs. 3rd Grade*~

As you all know I was placed at Screven Elementary last semester in a 3rd grade classroom and this semester I am placed in a 2nd grade classroom at Screven County Elementary. I love both grades but they are different in a few ways. I feel that third graders are more independent, where as the second graders need you to help them much more. In my third grade classroom, they spent half the day in one class and then switched because they had team teachers. The second grade class I am in right now does not switch, which is good in a way because you get very close to those students and do not have too many. I fell in love with both grades but I think third grade has stolen my heart. It may just be because I was able to  spend four more hours with them then I am able to now with my second graders. Of course the material in second grade seems easier to teach. Much of it seems like a review from first grade  where as in my third grade classroom they were learning things they had never heard of or seen before. I think I definitely want to stick with the younger grades in the future, but I have yet to experience the older ones so I am keeping an open mind about it!

  1. I completely understand the differences between the second and third grade. I've been with fourth grade, first grade, and now third grade. First grade has stolen my heart. Although I often wonder if I haven't fallen in love with the third graders because I'm only with them once a week for two hours. There isn't too much time to get acquainted with the curriculum or the students. Good luck with the rest of the semester.

  2. I plan on going into the education field to focus on the grades third or below, if at all possible. I think that second grade is a good one to start with. At this grade they are at the in between stages. This is the stage where they are somewhat independent, or can be a little bit responsible for their actions, but most are not yet at the smarty pants mentality. My sister teaches second grade and she loves it. She says that they are at the age where they like you, but they are not as clingy as some of the younger grades.

  4. Hey Shannon! Pretty picture! I also want to teach lower grades, preferably first or second. For my PPB experience, I had a fourth grade classroom. I loved all the students, but they were so independent! Now, for Curriculum, I am in a first grade class. I love it! All of the students want to talk to you and hold your hand. It's so sweet and I feel very appreciated. I hope everything is going well for you!

  5. Shannon! I agree with Elise! Its hard to pick just one grade to teach! I'm either thinking first or second. I think no matter where we end up its going to be great!

  6. Hi Shannon!
I also enjoyed observing a 3rd grade classroom! I love the age that third graders are because they are starting to become more independent and have such strong personalities! By the way.. i love your picture!!
